James will discuss his recent book on Canadian prime ministers and highlight the important legacy of a number of those who led the country. He will argue why we need to know our political history and address the role of historical context when evaluating the legacies of those who came before us. James will talk about the lessons that can be learned from studying the leadership of Canadian prime ministers, a group of people who have had an enormous impact on the nation.

The Author:
J.D.M. Stewart is a writer and historian, and one of the country’s foremost experts on Canadian prime ministers. His commentary regularly appears in The Globe and Mail, The Hub, and the Literary Review of Canada. He often appears in the media where he gives his historical perspective on issues of the day. James’s previous book, Being Prime Minister, was a Hill Times Top 100 pick as was his current title, The Prime Ministers: Canada’s Leaders and the Nation They Shaped. Published by Sutherland House, The Prime Ministers is now in its second printing and has been widely acclaimed for its accessible writing style and storytelling.
James also inspired a generation of students during his thirty-year career teaching history to high school students. In 2012, he was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contribution to history education in Canada.
James is the father of two and lives and writes in Toronto.
