A Speaker's Forum for a Canadian Viewpoint

Join us Sept 21st 2023 for an evening with Steve Paikin, Author of "John Turner: An Intimate Biography of Canada's 17th Prime Minister".

Steve Paikin is the host of TVO’s flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin, the gold standard for depth of analysis and thoughtful debate in Canadian media. In more than 30 years in the business, Steve has built a sterling reputation as an eminently fair journalist who has moderated multiple federal and Ontario election leader's debates.

Steve has authored eight books including his latest, "“John Turner: An Intimate Biography of Canada’s 17th Prime Minister”, has produced several feature-length documentaries, and reported from two different war zones.

Steve Paikin was born in Hamilton, Ontario and lives in Toronto.   Steve Paikin has honorary degrees from University of Toronto, Laurentian University, and McMaster University, and an honorary diploma from Humber College.  In December of 2013, Steve was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions as a journalist who engages, informs and educates viewers on a broad range of public policy issues. Paikin's wife helped write former Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown's memoir, "Takedown" in 2018.

This is Steve Paikin's third presentation to the Confederation Club, previously speaking on his comprehensive biographies of former Ontario PC Premiers John Robarts and Bill Davis.

John Turner was an Olympic-caliber sprinter, Rhodes Scholar, dated a royal princess, rescued former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker from a dangerous undertow in Barbados and as Finance Minister resigned after a disagreement with Pierre Trudeau over implementing wage and price controls.

However, Turner had questionable political instincts in calling the 1984 federal election early, and was outdebated by Brian Mulroney in leader's debates, resulting in two subsequent Progressive Conservative majorities.
