Patrick Brown and Larry Wettlaufer 40th Anniversary Gala

April 18, 2019: Michael Chong, MP for Wellington – Halton Hills – “The SNC – Lavalin Affair: A Constitutional Crisis”

The Confederation Club is pleased to welcome back Michael Chong, Member of Parliament for Wellington - Halton Hills Riding since 2004.  In 2006, he served in the cabinet of Prime Minister Stephen Harper as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Sport, as well as the President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada.  He ran for Leader of the Conservative Party in 2017, ultimately finishing 5th.

In 2015, Michael’s Reform Act passed Parliament and became law. The Reform Act begins to address a long-standing problem in Ottawa: the concentration of power in party leaders. It gives MPs more power to represent their constituents and Canadians. Michael was able to reach across the aisle and work with members from other parties to secure the bill’s passage.

The SNC Lavalin affair will likely be a major issue in the October 2019 federal election.  One issue that Michael Chong will focus on will be Committee Reform, particularly in light of the Justice Committee mis-management of SNC Lavalin hearings.

Chong is married to Carrie Davidson, whom he met while at university. She has roots in both Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. The couple live on a 100-acre farm in Fergus, and have three sons; William, Alistair, and Cameron.
